Vintage BACCARAT France Crystal Glass Black Cat Grooming Figurine paperweight. Condition is Very Good, but "Used".

Figurine has some small surface scratches and does not have felted pads on bottom. This vintage, retired, and hard to find black Baccarat crystal cat is called the "Grooming" or "Preening" cat.

It is signed with the etched Baccarat mark and has Baccarat stamp. See the last two photos. This cat figurine / paperweight fits perfectly in your hand and is almost fluid in design. This cat is approximately 3 inches high, 4 1/2 inches long and 4 inches wide. It is a heavy piece of crystal for its size a little over 2 lbs.

A must have for collectors! Baccarat crystal glass is made, like any other glass, by adding lead oxide to a mixture containing silica, a'flux' such as soda (sodium carbonate) and a'stabiliser' such as lime (calcium oxide). Very often Baccarat glassware will be engraved.

One of the oldest glass manufacturers still in existence, Baccarat Crystal dates back to 1764, when king Louis XV gave permission for founding of a glassworks in the town of the same name. The first items produced were utilitarian window panes, mirrors and the like.

In 1816 the company installed a crystal oven and began focusing on the manufacturing of fine crystal. They received their first royal commission in 1823 and went on to win many prestigious commissions and awards for over a century. In the past few decades, the company has expanded into other business areas, including perfume and hotels.
