Art Deco Neiger Egyptian Revival Flower Caps Cats Eye Glass Vintage Necklace

Neiger needs no introduction to the collector and there is a lot of research you can do online which i could never replicate in this listing. They are know for the strength and striking design and this is no exception. The necklace is dominated by the large graduated cat's eye art glass beads which Neiger were partial to. The beads resemble labradorites with their shifting fire and shading of luminous colour. Even just looking at them in my hands i can see how the light is never stationery in the beads.

The central bead is protected with two heavy and large flower caps on each side. The arrangement measures just over 30 mm. On either side of the central bead are two sets of smaller cat's eye beads with three tiers of the graduating petal caps leading outwards.

These are deeper in tone to the central bead. The cat's eyes are separated with round glossy black glass beads and the remainder of the necklace is composed of larger black beads with two tiers of the petal caps the necklace gradually deepens in tone from the centre outwards.

So much thought has gone into the design and ultimate effect of the necklace. Some of the caps have the remainder of green paint in the recesses. A technique employed by Neiger to bring depth to their designs. It was also used by Artists such as Rene Lalique who would use paint in the recesses of his glass jewellery and vases. Most of this is worn away However the entire surfaces would not have been painted, otherwise there would have been no silvering on the brass bases ie there would have been direct painting on the brass itself. The petals look quite beautiful with the rims of the petals in brass shading naturally into the silver with the addition of the deep green paint in some of the recesses.

The beads are hand knotted on black string so that all the beads are protected and also so that the necklace is not clumsy with such large and heavy components. It hangs beautifully as you would expect. The necklace fastens with a secure ring bolt clasp. The necklace is app 17.2 inches long which is fantastic as they can be as small as 13.5 inches. The depth of the central bead is app 16 mm.

A couple of very tiny specks to the cat's eyes that i have tried to show in the image of the beads in my hands but nothing to spoil the fabulous effect imo. The necklace had been in years of storage and i just gave some of the metal a very light polish so the detailing could be appreciated.

A wonderful gift for a Collector of rare and original Antique Jewellery. Interesting similarity to some of Jakob Bengel's work and i wonder which came earlier. The necklace weighs app 80 g so with boxing and packaging it will be over 100 g i will also have to use deeper box than 2.5 mm to protect the beads so it has to go as a Small Parcel rather than a large letter. Any boxes, mannequins or fabrics are for display only.
