ART DECO VERLYS OPALESCENT LA RASCASSE SCORPION FISH CAT. No 930 c 1933

  

This beautifully made, glowing opalescent fish was made by the French maker, Verlys about 1933. It is La Rascasse' ('Scorpion Fish').

Many of the original moulds for Verlys pieces of the 1930s went to America and copies made there, usually by Fenton, which can be bought to this day, but the American versions are signed in engraved script, simply'Verlys'. This one listed here was made in France about 1933 by the original firm of "Societe Anonyme Holophane" using the original moulds.

So the signature reads'Verlys France'. This design appears in the Holophane Verlys "Verrerie d'Art" Catalogue 1934 under the Catalogue Number 1285. La Rascasse is signed, intaglio in the mould, on the base. The signature is very very shallow and not easy to photograph but it is there, at the edge of the plinth under the fish's tail. The fish is mounted on a central oval domed plinth.

It is 16cms (6¼") long and just under 11cms (4¼") tall. It is quite heavy, being made of thick substantial opalescent glass, weighing 500gms before packing. This is a piece in an extensive private collection of French Art Deco Verlys glass that I shall be offering in the coming weeks. All the pieces in the collection were made in France in Les Andelys. And all are perfect collectors' items.

There are no cracks or repairs. I always, as a matter of policy, use a'signed for' and'tracked' postal option and insure for the full value. These substantial glass pieces require good packaging and plenty of it.

I pack most carefully in tough new packaging for which I make no charge. Please note that I have successfully sent fragile items all over the world for many years.
