A beautiful, rare and collectable cast iron cat doorstop by Hubley (stamped to base). 26cm / 10.25 inches tall, 3.8kg / 8lb 6oz. This is a very rare Art Deco style, probably made in the 1920s but certainly before 1940. The Hubley Manufacturing Company was established in Pennsylvania in 1894 and produced a range of cast iron toys, doorstops and bookends. The original design was formed in wood or hammered in metal, then pressed into compacted sand. Cast iron heated to 3000 degrees was poured into the mould, then when it had cooled and hardened it was popped out, the rough edges were filed off by hand and the pieces were joined and painted either black or cream. Some doorstops, eg those in the shape of flower baskets, were then hand-coloured. This cat has all the signs of authenticity - apart from the stamp cast into its base, its joins are only lightly marked, suggesting hand tools (not machines) were used, it has no visible screws, and there are a few (very small) scuffs on the back of the head and on the back, where you would expect a doorstop to show wear.
